Understanding Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) for Church Giving

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) are a beneficial way for individuals, particularly those aged 70½ and older, to support charitable organizations like churches while also enjoying tax advantages. Here’s what you need to know about QCDs and how they can enhance your stewardship.

What Is a QCD?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution allows individuals to donate directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) to a qualified charity, such as a church, without counting the distribution as taxable income. This can be especially helpful for those who are required to take minimum distributions (RMDs) from their IRAs each year.

Key Benefits of QCDs:

  • Tax Efficiency: Since the distribution goes directly to the church, it is excluded from taxable income. This may help lower your overall tax liability, even if you don’t itemize deductions.

  • It allows your stewardship to reflect both generosity and financial prudence.

  • Fulfills RMD Requirements: For those aged 73 and older (as of 2023 law changes), QCDs can count toward your required minimum distributions.

  • Simplified Giving: Donations are made directly from your IRA to the church, streamlining the process.

How to Make a QCD:

  • Eligibility: You must be aged 70½ or older.

  • IRA Type: QCDs must come from a traditional IRA.

  • Annual Limit: The maximum QCD is $100,000 per person per year.

  • Direct Transfer: Funds must be transferred directly from your IRA to the church.

Consult Your Financial Advisor

Before making a QCD, consult with your financial advisor or tax professional to ensure it aligns with your financial plans and to understand the latest IRS rules.

By understanding and utilizing QCDs, you can make a meaningful impact on your church’s work while managing your financial resources wisely.

Thank you,
