Barbecue

In 1971 the men of Mt. Hebron UMC decided to hold a barbecue as a fundraiser to generate money for the church building fund.  It was held at the Pineview Ruritan Hut and boasted the cooking of 10 pigs, about 1300 lbs.  The meat was transported to the church for sale.    Since that first year over 140,000 lbs. of pork and over 12,000 chickens have been barbecued. The BBQ proceeds are now used for missions projects and scholarships.  Nearly $250,000 has been raised and used for local and state mission projects and to finance the scholarship program.

The annual BBQ has evolved into a community event at Mt. Hebron UMC.  The United Methodist Women hold a bake sale on BBQ Saturday, their largest missions fundraiser of the year.  The Youth sponsor several fundraising activities during the weekend, raising funds for their mission projects and activities.  In recent years, there has been a free festival on the lawn on the Friday night of the BBQ featuring inflatable fun houses, a slide, games and a contemporary Christian music concert.  Not only does all this activity involve scores of Mt. Hebron members who make it happen, but hundreds of others from within and outside the church and community who come to purchase the excellent food, participate in the activities and enjoy the fellowship.  Click here to view a photo story of what goes on at our annual BBQ.

It takes a lot of people to make this wonderful event possible.  We would love to have your help at the 2011 BBQ!  There is bound to be a job and a time slot meant just for you. Click here to view the volunteer sign-up lists.

Mark your calendars:  This year's BBQ is scheduled for Saturday, October 8, 2011!  The Family Fun Night will be Friday, October 7!  Click here for more information.
